Supporting diversity in neuroscience
In 2022, IBRO was happy to support 30 schools worldwide. 748 participants, 54% female and 46% male, from all over the world, participated in in-person or online courses that happened in 21 countries and covered a wide range of topics in neuroscience. One of these training opportunities was the Peruvian School for Research in Neuroscience, which happened in Cusco, Peru, from 24 to 29 October 2022. The course aimed to provide participants with basic knowledge about the structure and function of the nervous system, as well as the main lab techniques used in the field. The School also introduced topics such as neurodegenerative disorders, neuropsychopharmacology, and computational neuroscience. In total, 25 students, from different career stages, came from Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia to take part in the school. Organizer Dr. Luis Pacheco shared his experience: “Organizing the School gave us an excellent opportunity to attract local and international students to train with us and work on projects with interdisciplinary researchers in the field of neuroscience. Until two years ago, this possibility was scarce or non-existent in Peru. Furthermore, the key benefit of our experience organizing this school was to establish a network with invited speakers from Uruguay, Brazil, and Puerto Rico to initiate collaborations in research projects and events within the Latin American and Caribbean regions.”
